EEN ONRECHTVAARDIGE HANDELING

In Frankrijk is recentelijk een leerkracht onthoofd door een extremist omdat hij tijdens een les over vrijheid van meningsuiting een cartoon liet zien van de Heilige Profeet Mohammed (vrede en zegeningen van God zij met hem). Tijdens deze les adviseerde hij de leerlingen met een islamitische achtergrond om de klas te verlaten als ze zich daardoor beledigd zouden voelen. Alweer staat de islam in de spotlight als zijnde een gewelddadige godsdienst die vrijheid van meningsuiting niet tolereert. De onthoofding van de leerkracht Samuel Paty is een zeer trieste gebeurtenis die niets te maken heeft met de islam.

Islam betekent jezelf onderwerpen aan de wil van God en het is een religie van vrede. De extremisten die achter zulke gruweldaden staan of deze uitvoeren gaan regelrecht tegen de leerstelling van de islam en van de profeet Mohammed (vrede en zegeningen van God zij met hem) in.

Voordat de profeet Mohammed (vrede en zegeningen van God zij met hem) begon met het verkondigen van islam stond hij in zijn omgeving al bekend als een eerlijke en oprechte man, en als iemand met hoge morele waarden. Zelfs toen hij begon met prediken zeiden de mensen:

“Mohammed, wij geloven niet dat jij een leugenaar bent, maar de boodschap die jij ons brengt is een leugen.”

Zijn eigen stamleden keerden zich tegen hem en zijn volgelingen. Hij werd openlijk belasterd, vernederd en bespot. Zowel hij als zijn volgelingen kregen te maken maken met fysiek en verbaal geweld ; zij werden op allerlei gruwelijke manieren aangevallen. Ze werden maandenlang geboycot en mochten geen voedsel en water ontvangen. Zijn vrouw Khadija en veel trouwe metgezellen overleden. Het lijden van de moslims was immens, maar hoe reageerden zij hierop? Zij bleven kalm en negeerden de beledigingen en bespottingen. De profeet Mohammed (vrede en zegeningen van God zij met hem) focuste zich alleen maar op zijn missie. Hij beantwoordde deze beledigingen en spotternij nooit met geweld, dat was nooit een optie. Kortom, wat in Frankrijk is gebeurd gaat volledig tegen zijn leer in. Zulke handelingen kunnen nooit gerechtvaardigd worden. Geweld als antwoord op vernedering bestaat niet in de islam. Sterker nog, islam heeft nooit geweld nodig gehad om zich over de wereld te verspreiden.

In de Koran zegt God dat we de vijandigheid en haat van anderen nooit moeten beantwoorden met haat. “En laat de vijandschap van een volk u niet aansporen, om onrechtvaardig te handelen. Weest rechtvaardig, dat is dichter bij de vroomheid. (5:9)”

Om de goede orde en vrede in de samenleving te bewaren zegt God in de Koran:

“En scheldt degenen, die zij naast Allah aanroepen niet uit, anders zullen zij uit nijd in hun onwetendheid Allah uitschelden. 6:109”

Wanneer je haat (lees: spot en vernedering) beantwoordt met haat, zullen we in een vicieuze cirkel van vijandigheid terechtkomen.

De actie van de 18-jarige Abdoulakh A. is niet goed te praten en we moeten zeker onze medeleven betuigen over de moord op Samuel Paty. Echter, we moeten ons afvragen wat de limieten van de vrijheid van meningsuiting zijn. Door elkaar te bespotten en met de emoties te spelen van een al gemarginaliseerde groep binnen de samenleving komen we in een cirkel van vijandigheid terecht, en dragen we bij aan een steeds groter wordende polarisatie in de samenleving. Hoe dan ook, islam laat in geen geval toe om gedrag, dat beïnvloed is door onwetendheid, met geweld te beantwoorden. Noch is het toegestaan om de wet in eigen handen te nemen of de wet te overtreden.

Tenslotte wil ik hieraan toevoegen dat het recht op een vrije mening een zeer belangrijk onderdeel is van de samenleving. Het is een recht die iedereen toekomt, maar wanneer dit recht leidt tot verdeeldheid en chaos tussen de mensen, dan moeten er limieten aan gesteld worden. Vrijheid van meningsuiting zou moeten bijdragen aan een vreedzame dialoog, vrede en meer begrip binnen de verschillende bevolkingsgroepen. De profeet van de islam zei: “Hij die de vader van een ander bespot, vernedert zijn eigen vader.” Ik wil mijn betoog afsluiten met een vers uit de heilige Koran.

Het goede en kwade zijn niet gelijk. Daarom weerstaat (het kwade) door hetgeen best is. Dan ziet, degene met wie gij vijandschap hebt, hij zal als uw boezemvriend worden. (41:35)
